Critique Without Criticism

It helps to have another pair of eyes on our manuscripts. We can all benefit from constructive advice and suggestions for making our books the best they can be. At Flying Turtle Publishing, Bree Jones provides that service.

Bree has had 12 years of experience as part of Flying Turtle Publishing’s editorial board. She’s a voracious reader and appreciates authors’ efforts and artistic sensibilities.

Sure, critique is entirely subjective. Remember, EVERY reader, including agents and editors, reads subjectively. We believe that most authors—whether new writer or published author—can benefit from a critique in the early draft of a manuscript.

It takes courage to hand your literary baby over to a stranger, but a first-chapter critique can provide suggestions, feedback on your ideas, and let you know if a reader will stay along for the ride.

Bree’s critiques do not include any editing, though she may point out repeated grammatical errors. She reads from the perspective of a person who wants to enjoy your work.

There is no guarantee that if you follow all the suggestions in your critique, you will get an agent, a contract or sell more than 100 copies. Many variables affect those outcomes. But taking advantage of a first-chapter critique can give you confidence that carries you through your creative journey.
